Original aluminum window
before-steve.jpg

With a retrofit window, the frame remains, but the glass portions are removed.  The window comes with an exterior flange of 2 inches width.  This is designed to cover over the remaining aluminum frame.  Caulking is then applied to the edge of the flange on three sides (not bottom).  If the caulking has a gap, then moisture can exit through the bottom

If, as in the bottom picture, there is a pop-out of wood or stucco, the flange is cut with a skill saw so as to fit within the pop-out.
